I am an Associate Professor in Computer Science at Hasselt University and affiliated with the research institute Expertise Centre for Digital Media. I do research and teach in the area of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). My research focuses on novel software and hardware tools to facilitate making ubiquitous computing devices. This includes tools to author sensor-based systems for physical computing and new approaches for designing and building form factors using digital fabrication machinery.

I am incredibly grateful for working together with talented students and researchers. As a technical-oriented researcher in human-computer interaction, I enjoy working across different disciplines. In the past this included computer science, electrical engineering, media design, and material science. Besides technical advice, I guide students in finding a novel and original projects and mentor them on a weekly basis in order to turn that idea into a world-class project. This approach resulted in top-tier publications, patents, and valorizations projects. If you are a researcher or student interested in similar research topics, I am glad to see how we could collaborate. Feel free to send me a mail: raf.ramakers@uhasselt.be

I received my PhD in Computer Science in 2016 from Hasselt University, working with Kris Luyten and Johannes Schoning. My PhD thesis, entitled “End-User control over Physical User-Interfaces: From Digital Fabrication to Real-Time Adaptability” was awarded with both the FWO – IBM Innovation Award and the FWO – Nokia Bell Scientific Prize. These awards are given annually to the best Belgian PhD dissertation in respectively Computer Science and Information and Communication Technology.
